2016 has been an exciting year of growth for Whitelock Community Farm. This growth has been tangibly seen on the lot south of Whitelock Street, as expansion efforts have neared completion. An outdoor community kitchen has been constructed, raised planter beds were installed for use in educational partnerships, and countless wheelbarrows of compost were spread to prepare the main growing space for planting.

Less obvious at first glance, community initiatives that have taken root over the past few years have continued to grow and thrive. Educational partnerships, community workshops, monthly potlucks, and student internships have not only continued, but have gained momentum as the community continues to take ownership of the farm. Workshops have been directed by neighborhood leaders, potlucks have grown in numbers and diversity, and interns have returned to the farm to build upon previous experiences.

These efforts have yielded fruit in our community, but exciting challenges remain for 2017. John Eager Howard Elementary School has moved to the Westside School Building, doubling the number of students enrolled and increasing the demand for Farm Club and healthy cooking classes. The expanded growing space presents exciting opportunities to increase production, but also the challenge of coordinating staff, intern, and volunteer time to cultivate this increase.

Your donation will help Whitelock Community Farm to continue to thrive in 2017, not only in growing healthy, affordable food, but also in sowing seeds of unity in Reservoir Hill.
